How To Stop Acne and Breakouts in Winter 2013

By 11/20/2013November 7th, 2014Acne Secrets

So winter’s coming up and if you’re where I’m from, Orange County California, temperatures are dropping to the mid-50’s and even as low as the 40’s early in the mornings.

So for all of you other readers that aren’t in Orange County who may have even COLDER winters, then this article definitely applies to you and your complexion.

We’re going to be covering 3 tricks I learned about preventing acne and breakouts this winter.

WINTER TRICK #1: Moisturize

If your skin is normally oily, you may not need to do this because your face may not get as dry. But if you notice that your lips are cracking and your face feels a little bit tighter, you may want to moisturize. For women, this isn’t a new concept. But for men, this may be a foreign land to you.

So here’s my advice when it comes to moisturizer:

1. Just because it’s more expensive doesn’t mean it’s better
2. You want oil free moisturizer if possible – this way you decrease the likelihood of clogging your pores
3. Simpler the better – you want less ingredients
4. Look for organic natural ingredients: if there’s something on there that you have no idea what it is, chances are you don’t want to put it on your face

You definitely want A good moisturizer on hand, you can moisturize in the morning and at night. Sometimes I do it at night so I can moisturize while I sleep so I don’t have to do it during the day.

A good natural moisturizer is aloe vera. It was originally used by many Native Americans because it’s a natural soothing agent for burns, is a disinfectant, and is anti-inflammatory. It’s great for the body skin because it contains amino acids and nutrients.

If you ever get sunburn or a cut, you can rub fresh aloe vera on your skin and it works wonders without all the side effects.

WINTER TRICK #2: Exfoliate

It’s inevitable that you’re skin is going to slough off. Sometimes during the winter, when it’s a little bit harsher on the your face, your skin may dry a little bit faster.

That’s why I sometimes exfoliate maybe twice a week to make sure that the dead skin doesn’t end up clogging my pores. This way, I manually aid the process of recycling through layers of skin.

Be careful though, you don’t want to exfoliate more than once every 3 days at the most, just because too much exfoliation can actually irritate the skin and cause further breakouts.

Remember: At most, you want to try to space it twice a week.

Recommended: Just do it once a week and you should be safe.

WINTER TRICK #3: Sunblock

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that there isn’t going to be sunlight. If you’re outside a lot, you still want to put on some sort of protection.

And by “a lot” I mean if you’re outside more than 45 minutes a day or if you have extremely sensitive and fair skin that’s easily burned. If this is so, you’re definitely going to want to look into a natural, oil free, simple sunblock to put on in the morning.

The same principles as the ingredients for a moisturizer apply here as well:

1. Just because it’s more expensive doesn’t mean it’s better
2. You want oil free sunblock if possible – this way you decrease the likelihood of clogging your pores
3. Simpler the better – you want less ingredients
4. Look for organic natural ingredients: if there’s something on there that you have no idea what it is, chances are you don’t want to put it on your face

The important thing to remember about sunblock is that even though it’s not really make up, you have to remember to remove it at night before you go to bed.

When I say “remove,” I don’t mean that you can simply wash it off with soap and water. I mean you want to take an extra step to remove it.

You can do this by using make up remover and if you’re a guy and you don’t have make up remover (you shouldn’t have it ;), then you can try using extra virgin olive oil. It’s a great alternative to help remove sunblock at the end of the day to make sure it doesn’t clog your pores.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Now, ideally you shouldn’t need to put on anything because, for example, if you do put on sunblock, you can remove it with extra virgin olive oil but you won’t remove all of it.

Therefore, not putting any sunblock on is better than putting on sunblock.

Then again, if you’re outside for longer than 45 minutes and may get sunburn, you will still want to put on sunblock because sun burn is definitely worse than clogged pores. Sun burn will severely damage your skin and long term repeats of sun burn can lead to skin cancer.

Skin cancer is definitely worse than any pimple.

But don’t worry, for those of you who are willing to brave the sun burn to avoid acne, eventually after using my program, you won’t have to use anything on your face.

These days I just use soap and water. No moisturizer, no aloe vera, no sunblock.

I’m not really outside for longer than 45 minutes a day though, but even when I am sometimes, may face is still pretty resilient to the rays of the sun. That’s because of my next secret …
